Why Retire to the Philippines

Why, you say?

Because everything we need for our retirement is over there!

• the cost of living is amazingly affordable
• the climate is mild (not too hot/not too cold)
• living is “safe and secure” (like anywhere in the world)
• the people speak English, no need to learn a new language
• people are friendly, hospitable, warm and somewhat “Westernized”
• majority of the people are Christian, so there are no dietary laws to observe
• the country is lovely and the night life in the city is alive
• so many more other reasons!

This little country seems to be the best place for retirement!

For the benefit of our readers, we are showing here the major malls, so that we have an idea when we retire in the Philippines.  We will start with the biggest:

SM MALL OF ASIA

This is the largest in the Philippines and third largest in the world, at least by floor area. It is right on Manila Bay in downtown Metro Manila.

According to their website, it is “More than just a Mall, the SM Mall Of Asia is a tourist destination that has raised the standard of shopping, leisure, and entertainment in the Philippines.

Almost four hectares (approximately 9.88 acres) of floor area. 8,000 parking slots. 5,000 square meters allotted for public utility vehicles. 100 slots for tourist buses. Almost one kilometer in length, and a perimeter of almost 2 kilometers. Close to 2 million bags of cement used to build it and 44,000 gallons of paint consumed. It also has 1.9 million floor tiles installed in it.  One wonders if this scale of development was for an airport terminal, a seaport, or an industrial complex.”

Interestingly, these facts speak about the Philippines’ largest and world’s third largest mall, the 407,000 square-meter (4,308,911.539 square-feet) SM Mall of Asia:

From Wikipedia –

The mall includes branches of all of the standard anchor stores found in most of the SM Supermalls. The first-ever branch of Taste Asia, one of the SM Supermalls’ food court brands, is located right outside the mall’s supermarket, the sprawling SM Hypermarket.

One of the mall’s main attractions is the first ever IMAX theater in the country, along with a Director’s Club Theater for intimate screenings (30 La-Z-Boy seats), a Premiere Cinema, and the CenterStage Cinema which can be used for live musical concerts and theatrical performances. The San Miguel-Coca-Cola IMAX Theatre is one of the world’s biggest IMAX screens in 3D including 2D screenings.

In addition to the mall’s special theaters, it also has six regular two-tiered movie theaters similar to the ones found in almost every SM Supermall.

The mall features the Philippines’s first Olympic-sized ice skating rink. At 61 by 30 meters, the rink is described as the biggest of its kind in Southeast Asia. It can accommodate both recreational and competitive figure skating, as well as ice hockey. Along with plain access and skate rentals, the rink’s operators also offer training programs in both figure skating and ice hockey.   Some ice skating competitions have been held at the mall’s ice skating rink, the most prestigious yet having been Skate Asia 2007. It was also the first time that the Philippines had hosted any international ice skating event.

The mall’s open-air Music Hall directly facing the sea has also held several events, contests, and concerts.

The mall also provides office space. Dell International Services, a subsidiary of Dell, Inc. once occupied a 13,470.5-square meter area at the second floor of the north parking building of the mall. At present, Teleperformance has taken over that space.

But pictures speak louder than words:

I don’t think retirees to the Philippines like us will be able to see the whole mall in one day!  But it would be great if we live in Manila because we have a lot of places to go to, like in this mall!  I guess I won;t be tired walking around a mall like this!  There would be new things to see every day!
